Best Practice I

1. Title of the Practice - KUSHI: (Sri) Kaliswari’s Unique “Spreading Happiness Initiatives”

  • 2. Objectives

  •   Institution offers Value Education as mandatory course and usual academic teaching and learning process takes place. But KUSHI transforms theory into practice. Since imbibing human values cannot be confined to classroom alone, Institution encourages Students to render compassionate service under Extension Activities in Orphanages, Old-age homes and Centres for Differently - Abled, thereby spread happiness in the life of less-fortunate.
To awaken values like love, compassion, empathy, generosity among Students by caring and sharing.
To promote tolerance and respect among Students for fellow human beings- regardless of age, background or abilities.
To sensitize Students to social issues and foster community commitment.
  • 3. Context

  •   Context for practising “Spreading Happiness Initiative” namely KUSHI is to sensitize Students to the struggles of less fortunate fellow human beings and instil in them a strong sense of societal responsibility. In this regard, engaging Students in Community services in Orphanages, Old age homes and Centres for Differently - Abled facilitates the Students to imbibe values like love, compassion, generosity, patience and treat all individuals with respect, regardless of their age, background or abilities. Students’ voluntary visits under KUSHI enable them to understand the struggle of hapless Orphans, vulnerability of isolation experienced by the Elderly Citizens and the challenges confronted by the Differently - Abled. Furthermore, KUSHI functions to spread happiness through volunteering and serves as a bridge between Students and Society building socially responsible, empathetic citizens.
  • 4. The Practice

  • KUSHI is a unique feature of SKC
Spreading Happiness Initiative, "KUSHI”, operates systematically. Student Council Members and Class Representatives, under guidance of Teachers, conduct motivational campaigns during lunch breaks to raise funds for Orphanages, Old age homes, and Centres for Differently - Abled. In the past five years, KUSHI has successfully raised Rs. 4,12,707 for charitable causes. Under the guidance of HODs, these pooled funds are allocated to support the following service activities in the chosen centres on behalf of their respective Departments.
  •  I. Spreading Happiness through feeding the hungry

  •  Over the past five years, Students from all departments along with Faculty have regularly visited Orphanages (Cybio, RGMI, Vallalar, CSI Orphanages) and distributed nutritionally balanced, fresh meals to promote physical and mental happiness of inmates with love and care. This firsthand experience fosters empathy, compassion and sense of responsibility among Students while finding happiness in giving.

II. Spreading Happiness by procuring the requirements

During KUSHI visits, Students undertake service-oriented activities like cleaning and tree-planting drives at Orphanages and Old age homes. Utilizing the pooled funds, Students procured stationery items, groceries, medical kits, toiletries, sports items, book racks with books and magazines, ceiling fans, garments, bed sheets, etc. as per the requirements of Inmates. These small, nameless acts of kindness enamel their personalities with philanthropy.

III. Spreading Happiness through Interactive Entertainment

To foster compassion and respect for Elders, Students are encouraged to make regular visits to Amirtha Anbu Illam and Jeevakkal Old age Homes. During these visits, Students interact with them and provide services by conducting Health check-ups, Physical fitness activities, Games, Group prayers, Cultural events etc.  They also donated craft tools and board games to keep the depressed Elders happy. These activities alleviate boredom and significantly impact the physical and emotional well-being of the Elders, spreading happiness in their lives.

IV. Spreading Happiness through Differently-Abled Empowerment

Students regularly visit Differently-abled centres like Jeevakkal, Elwin Centre, Soolakarai Deaf and Dumb School. Inmates of Elwin Centre are invited to the Institution to organise Exhibition cum Sales. They display their own products, including squashes, sweets, pickles, etc., Students from Commerce sell these products on campus. All Faculty and Students willingly purchase these items to support charitable cause, resulting in sales of Rs. 78,600 till date. Institution provides sumptuous lunch to the participants and encourages them to showcase their cultural talent. They are amply rewarded with gifts to spread happiness in them.

     5. Evidence of Success

Spreading Happiness namely KUSHI awakens Students’ sense of responsibility towards Society and fosters a sense of empathy and compassion in them.
    • Reports of the Students after confronting the sufferings of the less fortunate during their visits to Orphanages, Old age Homes and Centres for Differently-Abled exhibit Students’ emotional and psychological transformation.
    • Students’ feedback further serves as a proof for inculcating human values through this community engagement programme.
    • Media coverage, Video documentation, Reports, and Appreciation letters bear witness to the success of imparting values through this programme “Spreading Happiness," namely KUSHI.
    • Practice of providing financial and material support is much appreciated by all Stakeholders and the Beneficiaries.
    • Even after leaving the Campus Alumni visits such centres and donates that serves as evidence of Students’ life-long community commitment.

      6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

    • Teenage youngsters enter College Campus with a carefree vision of life, often without exposure to the challenges faced by less-fortunate in Society. So it is difficult to make them empathize with Orphaned children, Senior citizens, or Differently-abled. To enable Students internalize values in real-life situations, experiential learning is offered through field visits besides theoretical knowledge of ‘Value Education’ Course. Initially, motivating Students to serve and bring happiness to the dark and isolated world of less fortunate was a challenge. But this hurdle is overcome through consistent motivation.
    • Pooling money for community engagement is really a challenge. Most of the Students cannot spare huge sums during fund-raising event since they themselves hail from financially poor background.
    • Sustaining Students’ interest towards societal causes that does not produce immediate results is always a challenge. However, KUSHI definitely ignites a spark in the minds of Kaliswarians towards community Engagement.

      Notes: Optional

The College, as a Self-Financing Educational Institution, has limited resources to answer all financial needs of the less fortunate. But their expectation remains high and demanding. With the unified efforts of the Educational Institution, Industries, Households and Individuals dedicated to the noble cause of charity for the less fortunate, we can successfully bridge the divide between constrained resources and soaring community expectations, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future for everyone.
